What is AVID?
Advancement Via Individual Determination
Most AVID strategies are for ALL students, and they are taught in the general classes.
The AVID elective is for some carefully selected students.
The AVID elective is for students who:
•Have 70-90 in Pre-AP classes, but want to learn how to do better
•Have 80-99 in on-level, but want to take at least 1 Pre-AP class next year
•Are willing to work hard
•Are willing to learn and maintain organization strategies
•Work well with others
•Desire to go to college, but need guidance and/or school supports
What do students do in the AVID elective?
Students learn skills needed for college success:
•Critical reading
•Writing and research skills
•Peer tutorial groups
•Organization skills
•Team building, community service, college field trips
•Accountability
•HAVE FUN LEARNING ABOUT COLLEGE AND LIFE EXPECTATIONS
How do students get selected the AVID elective?
Teacher recommendation
Complete and return the application packet to Lauren Dill at Jobe Middle School
Choose AVID and at least 1 Pre-AP class on your course selection sheet, but you may choose as many as you want
Be interviewed about your work ethic and goals
